How A Bonsai Beginner Can Master The Techniques Of Bonsai Masters

from: Masum Uddin

When it comes to bonsai, there is a distinct allure to the miniaturization of trees that, when properly cared for, possess the capacity to live for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, many beginner bonsai owners are under the impression that after bringing home their tree, there are no responsibilities attached. In order to enjoy the beauty of a healthy bonsai, one must become familiar with proper care techniques, as well as the tools and supplies needed for desirable maintenance and growth.

Bonsai Tools

To maintain the integrity of your bonsai, special tools aid in the process. One of the most common is called a concave cutter, which prunes trees without leaving behind stubs. It is also suggested to purchase leaf trimmers, root hooks, coir brushes, knob cutters, and wire cutters. A variety of small, medium, and large shears are needed to assist in the shaping and detailing of trees. Anodized aluminum or copper wire also help shape bonsai trees by holding branches in place until they are set.

Potting and Repotting

During the springtime, bonsai are typically repotted and root-pruned. As young trees develop, repotting takes place every two years, but lessens in frequency as the trees begin to mature. The process of repotting prevents trees from becoming bound to their pots and also promotes the growth of fresh feeder roots, which permits a higher level of moisture absorption.

If you have purchased a pre bonsai (not in a pot), you must select a container that provides large drainage holes with nursery fabric covering the bottom outlets. Bonsai potting soil should line the base of the pot, which is then patted down using a bonsai fork. Next, remove any excess dirt from the pre-bonsai and trim the roots, followed by placing the tree into the pot. The addition of slow-release fertilizer concludes the potting of a pre-bonsai.

If you wish to prune your pre-bonsai, it is important to wait two weeks before transferring to a pot. After potting your tree, set the bonsai in a bright location within your home, making sure to keep it out of direct sunlight. Temperatures of 65 degrees or over should surround the bonsai tree.

The Importance of Wiring

When controlling the shape of your tree, bonsai wiring is one of the most powerful tools a beginner should learn how to master. The best time to wire a tree is during the spring or fall when foliage is lowest and the tree is supple. Stiff trees in the winter make the process quite hard and often unsuccessful. When wiring your tree, wrap the trunk and each branch in spirals of bonsai wire so that each branch becomes bent.

Eventually, the tree will "train" branches to grow in the direction you desire. The wire method continues for one growing season. When it is time for removal, the wire is cut away in small pieces, which causes less damage to the foliage. Some people are also known to fasten weights to branches in an attempt to create the look of maturity by sagging tree limbs.

The Importance of Watering

Since a bonsai pot offers limited space, watering the tree may prove a difficult task. Depending on the species you have purchased, some trees are able to handle longer periods of dryness, while others demand a constant supply of moisture. If you water too much or create soggy surroundings, the threat of fungal infection lingers, such as "root rot." It is important to always water your tree according to its species and never let the soil become "bone dry."

A common method of watering a bonsai is to mist foliage every few days and immerse the pot in water once a week for 15 minutes. After immersing the plant in water, transfer to a saucer, making sure that excess water collects to prevent rotted roots.

The Importance of Pruning

To make sure your bonsai is growing to the best of its ability, pruning is important for not only its health, but also appearance. A few suggestions include making sure pruning takes place during the correct season (which depends on species), giving the tree a reasonable amount of time to recover, leaving extra branches in weak regions of the trunk to promote growth, and immediately removing problem branches that hinder the progress of healthy and new growth.

By following the above suggestions, a beginner bonsai tree owner will eventually learn how to maintain and properly care for this intriguing addition to any household.
